Sri Lanka has taken a historic decision, setting an example of accountability in politics. Now the pension given to the MPs after retirement has been completely abolished. The 49-year-old law was repealed by parliament. The Minister of Justice made it clear during the debate that the way the public sees the work & conduct of their representatives does not give the impression that they should have the right to a lifetime pension.
This step of the govt is considered to be a big change in the direction of defining politics as service, not convenience. This decision is not just a country's policy but a message to question the political culture. The message is clear: people's money for the benefit of the people. Here the public representatives get a pension & many other facilities, while the common citizen has to work & contribute for decades for a pension. It is a question: Is public representation a service or a privilege?
