Truly an inspirational story:
C. Radhakrishna Rao retired at the age of 60 and moved to the United States to live with his daughter and grandchildren.
There, at the age of 62, he became a professor of statistics at the University of Pittsburgh, and at 70, he became a department head at the University of Pennsylvania.
He obtained American citizenship at the age of 75.
At the age of 82, he received the National Medal of Science and an honour at the White House. Today, at the age of 102, he has been awarded the Nobel Prize in Statistics.
The Government of India had previously honoured him with the Padma Bhushan (1968) and the Padma Vibhushan (2001). Rao says, "In India, no one cares about you after retirement. Even colleagues respect power rather than scholarship."
Receiving the Nobel Prize at the age of 102 while enjoying excellent health is perhaps a unique instance. It is an event we should always remember. Retirement does not mean becoming inactive. Life is about living with full enthusiasm until one's very last breath.
Truly a learning lesson.
