Why and who set fire to Nalanda University?
How was the Buddhist era's Nalanda University destroyed? Why did this destruction happen and who was responsible for this? These are the most debatable questions from the time of the Indus Civilisation. The Nalanda University site belongs to the Buddhist era but was destroyed in the post-Buddhist period. The critical point is that there were many Buddhist sites between the Indus civilisation and Nalanda University; why were they not destroyed? But only Nalanda University, as a Buddhist site, was destroyed. Even the written literature of the Buddhist era was also erased. But buried materials, especially bricks, stones, metal-made things, and so on, of sites between the Indus civilisation and Nalanda University were discovered and given a clear indication that all unearthed sites belong to the Buddhist era.
To destroy the Buddhist literature, Nalanda University was set on fire. The Muslim reign began in the 12th century, and the destruction of Nalanda University through fire happened in the mid-13th century, as per available sources. There are no such examples of sites that were destroyed by fire, whether Buddhist temples or educational institutions, that fall under the geographical area between the Indus River region and Nalanda University.
Why will a Muslim invader or king destroy only Nalanda University, which is in Bihar? Why did Bakhtiyar Khilaji not find any Buddhist sites for destruction between the Indus civilisation and Nalanda University? It means there was only Nalanda University working at the time of its destruction by Bakhtiyar Khilaji, but other Buddhist sites were already destroyed or buried by other rulers between the end of the Buddhist reign and the beginning of the Muslim reign. Between these two periods, was there any reign that could have destroyed Nalanda University?
The main reason for destroying Nalanda University was the power of education, knowledge, and literature, not its religious power, wealth, or resources. It is a logical fact that the power of knowledge or literature is more dangerous than weapons. I do not think even a Muslim invader or ruler knew the language or script of literature in Nalanda University and found it so dangerous for Muslims or his reign. One more fact: when the Muslim reign began in India, there was no Buddhist kingdom. Then why would a Muslim king or invader destroy a university? Because without a Buddhist king, a Buddhist university will not be in a position to challenge a Muslim king or invader. Nalanda University was destroyed by the Hindu king or ruler before the Muslim reign was established because its glorious Buddhist literature was the biggest challenge to the Brahmins' dominance. And it was a time when Muslim invaders were ruling the Kshetriya kingdoms.
Therefore, the fire at Nalanda University was set to destroy its literature. As the Brahmins' language was Sanskrit, it was a copy of Pali. To promote Sanskrit and Brahmanical literature, Pali literature was in huge quantity in the university; a small portion of important Buddhist literature in Pali was converted into Sanskrit, and the rest of the literature of Nalanda University was put on the fire. Nalanda University was burnt down due to a fire in its library. The conclusion: Nalanda University was not destroyed by a Muslim invader or ruler, but it was destroyed by the Hindu ruler before the Muslim reign was established.
